THE STARTREK Night Walk will take place on the 5th and 6th of March 2016. The event is organised by the Ilfracombe Rotary Clubs and the three main charities it will support are the North Devon Hospice, the Children’s Hospice and Devon Freewheelers plus other local good causes.

The walk takes place on Exmoor and the distance is 8 miles or 16 miles, your choice, in teams of 4 to 6 people walked with the aid of a map and compass.

A StarTrek Challenge Trophy is awarded to the team completing either distance and answering the most clues on the way round correctly.

The 3 teams raising the most sponsorship are able to give £500, £300 or £150 to their chosen charity.

Businesses can enter teams to try to win the StarTrek Corporate trophy, this is given to the firm that raises the most sponsorship they can also give £500 to their chosen charity

For the first time at this event, there will be a special section for the fittest Pub team; their pub will receive a cask of beer from Exmoor ales. The pub that raises the most sponsorship will also receive a cask of beer and can give £500 to their chosen charity.

On the 17th December 2015, Great Torrington School held the first Big Bang, an event to raise awareness and inspire pupils into the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths).

Throughout the day there was an array of various workshops, including Space Odyssey (Simon Ould) and his Planetarium Dome, as well as the amazing Peter Wright from Wonderstruck, with his Science in Movie Effects Show.

The Sports Hall was full of fun interactive stands, provide by local employers and organisations from Beran Instruments, TDK Lambda, Eaton Aerospace, Greenfield Engineering & GTD, GCHQ, Institute of Engineering & Technology, Dartmoor Zoo, Sciencedipity, Petroc, Exeter College, Plymouth University, Institute of Physics, WOW Scrapstore & Mrs Recycle and The Royal Navy.

Lisa Hutchings North Devon+, says “The event was a great success with over 500 pupils engaged in STEM activities throughout the day.  The interactive activities certainly proved that Science is more than white coats and test tubes.”

Mrs Whiteman from GTS says: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the Big Bang.  The feedback has been so positive and inspiring, such as “It was the best event of its type I have attended”, “brilliant” and “fantastic event”

“We are delighted to announce that the Big Bang @ GTS will take place 8th December 2016”.

STEM activity is growing across North Devon, with active engagement between schools and employers.  If you are interested in STEM and would like more information, please contact Lisa Hutchings at North Devon+, 01237 426426.
