Hele Cornmill was built in 1525 and celebrates its 500th anniversary this year. The mill is the last working watermill in North Devon and continues to grind wheat to make wholemeal flour.
Over the last 15 years of ownership David and Kathy Jones have researched the history of the mill and, having received a grant of £11,700 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, have been able to create additional noticeboards detailing the history of the mill, it’s owners and tenants dating back to 1525. Additionally, 3 disabled parking spaces have been installed and there is improved accessibility of the site for disabled users.
David, Kathy and daughter, Katie attended a Heritage Skills Bootcamp organised by Petroc at which they learned how to use hot lime. As a result Katie took on the challenge to repoint and limewash the mill in its anniversary year and work was completed in time for Easter opening.
The mill is open on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May for National Mills weekend. This coincides with The Ilfracombe Art Trail at which the Jones family (David, Ben, Jennifer, Emily and Katie) will be exhibiting examples of their art including a full size carousel horse, pixel art, line drawings, pottery and crochet.
The tearoom will be open from 10am-5pm on this weekend.
Full opening times and further information can be found on Helecornmill.com
